Whenever possible, the parent/caretaker relative
must provide the designated “temporary” payee with
a signed note stating that the individual is to receive
the grant. The parent’s/caretaker relative’s
signature must be compared by the EW with the
signature on the most recent CW 7 or other official
document.

What are CalWORKs Direct Rent payments?
CalWORKs Direct Rent payments are payments for
rent made directly to the participant’s landlord out of
the Assistance Unit’s (AU) grant.
The payment is:
Deducted from the CalWORKs aid payment and
is counted as part of the grant for the month;
Used in computing Food Stamp allotments;
Issued on the 1 st of each month and for the
current month’s rent. The payment is deducted
from the first issuance of the month but may be
issued through the daily process when the case
has been rescinded;
Not deducted from supplemental or retroactive
CalWORKs payments; and
Counted against the CalWORKs and TANF time
clocks.
What is the amount of the Direct Rent payment?
The participant’s rent amount that is entered in the
“Amount” field in the Shelter/Utilities Expense
Information screen is the amount of the Direct Rent
payment that will be mailed to the landlord.
If the amount is equal to or greater than the eligible
CalWORKs grant (after penalties, offsets and
recoupments), the Direct Rent payment will be the
full eligible CalWORKs grant.
If the amount is less than the eligible CalWORKs
grant (after penalties, offsets and recoupments),
there will be a split grant issuance. The balance of
cash aid remaining after the rent is paid, is available
to the participant via the EBT card/or through Direct
Deposit.
