(b) All other articles will be sorted alphabetically according to the names of the addressees<br />

into the compartments of two of the locked almirahs, one of which will be used for<br />

articles addressed in English and the other for articles addressed in the vernaculars. At<br />

the close of the month in which the articles were received, those in each compartment<br />

will be tied in separate bundles according to classes (i.e., postcards, letters, packets),<br />

and replaced in the almirahs pending any enquiries which may be made regarding them<br />

by the addressees or senders.<br />

433. Final disposal of Returned unregistered articles of the letter-mail. – Returning<br />

unregistered articles, other than those referred to in rule 424 which remain in deposit after the<br />

expiration of the month succeeding that in which they were placed in the almirahs referred to in the<br />

preceding rule, will be dealt with as follows :-<br />

(a) Letters and postcards will be destroyed by being burnt in the presence of the Manager.<br />

(b) Book packets containing articles of no value will be disposed of by being sold as waste<br />

paper or destroyed. Unclaimed copies of the magazines, periodicals, etc., shall<br />

invariably be returned to their publishers or distributors or agents as the case may be.<br />

The despatch of the publications to their publishers or distributors of agents may be<br />

made monthly. In case the number of copies of a particular magazine or periodical in a<br />

month is less than five, the dispatch may be held over for the second month, at the end<br />

of which the copies must be despatched in any case.<br />

434. Disposal of articles, entered in register of registered articles and articles<br />

containing valuable property received. – (1) Articles which are entered in the register of<br />

registered articles and articles containing valuable property received (R.L.O.-3) will be kept in a<br />

separate almirah. This almirah will be strong and well secured and provided with compartments in<br />

which the articles will be arranged chronologically according to the dates of receipt. An index<br />

having columns with the headings named below will be maintained in manuscript in which the<br />

articles will be entered alphabetically according to the names of the addresses, a sufficient number<br />

of pages being allotted to each letter of the alphabet:<br />

(a) Date of receipt in the R.L.O.<br />

(b) No. on each article.<br />

(c) Office of posting<br />

(d) Name and address of the addressee.<br />

(e) Page of the register in which article is entered.<br />

(2) Registered postcards which remain in deposit after the expiration of the month<br />

succeeding that in which they were received will be disposed of in the same manner as<br />

unregistered postcards, i.e., they will be destroyed by being burnt in the presence of the Manager.<br />

(3) Registered articles of the letter-mail and parcels which contain nothing of intrinsic or<br />

saleable value will, after being kept in deposit for a period of three months after the expiration of<br />

the month in which they were received, be disposed of as follows :-<br />

(a) Letters will be destroyed by being burnt in the presence of the Manager.
