Delayed onset symptoms are due to deep tissue damage and associated with fluid
collection in the lungs and lung function abnormalities. The fluid collection can occur
within minutes, but usually there is a latent period of hours; symptoms can be delayed
up to 72 hours.
Following significant exposure, death due to pulmonary edema can occur after a delay of
24-48 hours.
Exposed persons can have chronic airway disease with permanently abnormal
pulmonary function.
