Stabilization is the highest priority. Patients die of their injuries much faster than they do
from radiation poisoning.
Radiation experts should be consulted liberally given the relatively uncommon
opportunity for any individual clinician to care for an exposed patient.
Training and drills should be offered for all forms of hazard response.
Adequate supplies and survey instruments should be stocked, and they should be
accessible and in working order.
Standard precautions reduce contamination of the healthcare provider.
Early symptoms and their intensity indicate the severity of the radiation injury. These
should be inquired about, observed, and recorded.
