One such incident occurred in 1989 when it was alleged that Chilean grapes imported to
the U.S. were deliberately contaminated with cyanide. In fact, an initial laboratory
analysis one of these grapes we positive for a cyanide. This lab result turned out to be a
false positive, and in fact, there was no cyanide contamination. In the meantime, the
Chilean grape crop destined for import to the U.S. had to be destroyed at the cost of a
loss of $100s of millions.
No one died, no one was medically harmed, and in fact no one was contaminated, but
the impact was still profound.
