TRANSPORT OF DANGEROUS GOODS AND RISK MANAGEMENT 250The special role of the translator in society is aptly described in an essay that was published posthumously in 1803and that had been written by Ignacy Krasicki:“Translation... is in fact an art both estimable and very difficult, and therefore is not the labor and portion ofcommon minds; [it] should be [practiced] by those who are themselves capable of being actors, when they seegreater use in translating the works of others than in their own works, and hold higher than their own glory theservice that they render to their country”. 1The meaning of the concept of interpreting/translating, and the purpose and relevance of this intellectual activity ofthe people we call interpreters/translators (although the human mind has already invented translating machines)stem from this. Concurrently, this makes clear the fact that the relevance of interpreting/translating andinterpreter/translator as the agent is critical, often decisive, for verbal communication, and the accountability ofinterpreting/translating and interpreter/translator for this kind of communication validity and reliability is essential.This accountability gains additional weight when the exchange of messages/information by way ofinterpreting/translating involves the areas of human activity, and natural and social phenomena paramount for thevery survival of individual, species, community, or civilization on the one hand, and the environment on the other.Needless to argue, one of such areas is security.How does it look like then when the interpreting/translating of spoken or written English is in question and theconveyed message/information falls within the area of human security environmental security, and/or the securityof cultural properties?Academics and other specialists on this matter know that science and profession admit the content of very conceptof security is not yet quite precisely defined. The reasons for such state of affairs go far beyond the boundaries ofthis work and they should not be discussed hereafter. Also, it would be enough to present, without furtherdeliberation, that neither human, nor environmental, or security of cultural goods as parts of an overall security, oras separate “kinds” of security are satisfactorily defined, outside the influence of personal view. Namely, there areauthors who argue that environmental security is a part of human security, and those who are of the opinion thatthese two securities are complementary, but still separate. When it comes to defining the security of cultural goods,its validity directly depends on the validity of the definition of “cultural goods” concept.Consequently, an interpreter/translator is on a slippery slope here, and the danger of slipping and falling down, interms of the translation validity and reliability occurs even when interpreting/translating the basic concepts ofhuman security, environmental/ecological security and the security of cultural goods/objects/artifacts. Regardingthe commonly accepted fact that there are no absolute synonyms in a language, and that there are always nuances,accountable for slight difference in meaning, an interpreter/translator is on thin ice doing their job, because thereare synonyms to be interpreted/translated in both English and Serbian Language.ENGLISH V. SERBIANIn this part of the work the author presents a smaller number of very explicit examples to illustrate lexical andgrammatical problems of interpreting/translating from BrE/AmE to Serbian and vice versa. Contrastive analysisproves to be the appropriate method of presenting, but also attempting to solve problems of this kind. Phrasal Verbs are verbs that have their meaning, but followed by a preposition, an adverb of place or time, anoun or another verb they get a different meaning. Although they are an important and well known distinction ofthe English language, they are often the source of problems in interpreting/translating.
