Sementara means 'while' in the sense of 'someone does something,<br />

while someone else does something else' or 'something happens while<br />

something else also happens'.<br />

Kakak perempuan saya memasak sementara ibu pergi berbelanja.<br />

My older sister cooked while my mother went shopping,<br />

Pada bulan Desember di Eropa turun salju, sementat-a di Australia<br />

cuaca panas.<br />

In December, in Europe it snows, while in Australia it is hot.<br />

Tuti tertawa sernentara ketiga temannya rnenangis.<br />

In contrast to sementara, which is used either for different people doing<br />

different things at the same time or for different things happening at the<br />

same time, sambil is used to refer to the same person(s) or animal(s)<br />

doing two things at the same time. It can be placed either at the<br />

beginning or in the middle of a sentence.<br />

Ria makan sambil menonton televisi.<br />

Rio is eating while watching television.<br />

Sambil meringkik kuda itu berlari.<br />

While neighing the horse ran.<br />
