There are different ways to report indirectly, depending on what kind of<br />

sentence we are reporting.<br />

Using bahwo for statements<br />

If the sentence that we are reporting is a statement, we use bahwa (that)<br />

after the 'say' verb.<br />

Dia berkatdmengatakan bahwa dia beragama Islam.<br />

Hdshe said t& helshe is a Muslim.<br />

Anak kecil itu berkatalmengatakan bahwa dia suka sekali makan<br />

permen.<br />

That child said that hefshe really likes eating lollies.<br />

Using apakah for 'yes' or 'no' questions<br />

If what we are reporting is a question requiring a 'yes' or 'no' answer,<br />

we use apakah (if, whether), after the verb bertanya (to ask a question).<br />

lndri bertanya apakah saya pernah melihat hantu.<br />

lndri asked if I had ever seen a ghost.<br />

Saya bertanya kepada kamu apakah mau ikut dan kamu bilang tidak.<br />

I asked you whether you wanted to come along and you said you didn't.<br />
