Working in pairs, take turns to do the following.
1 Practise pronouncing the base words and the meN- words from
Latihan 1.
2 Act out each of the verbs while your partner guesses the meaning.
In transitive verbs, meN- indicates active voice (also called subjectfocus).
That is, it tells us that the focus of the sentence is on the actor,
who is also the subject of the sentence.
MeN- contrasts with the di- prefix in that di- indicates possive voice
(also called object-focus), cvliare the focus is on the object of the
sentence. This contrast is discussed in more detail in Chapter 19.
MeN- verbs with noun base
Some transitive meN- verbs come from nouns. The following verbs
mean 'do something associated with the base word' or 'using what is
indicated by the base word'.
borgol
cat
parut
sapu
semir
sisir
handcuff
paint
. grater
broom
polish
comb
memborgol
mencat,
mengecat
memarut
menyapu
menyemir
menyisir
to handcuff
to paint (for example,
the wall)
to grate
to sweep (for example, shoes,
hair, but not furniture)
to polish
to comb
MeW verbs with verbal base
Other meN- verbs have a verbal base and, as mentioned in Chapter 10,
the presence of the prefix is required to make a well-formed verb.
