as discussed below. Examples of more complex relationships might include<br />

an increase of <strong>the</strong> hunger variable after sex or perhaps a concomitant increase<br />

in fear sensitivity during sex. <strong>The</strong>se relationships can in principle be determined<br />

neurologically, if not behaviorally. <strong>The</strong> relationships may change in<br />

time and could possibly be said to define <strong>the</strong> emotional state of <strong>the</strong> mantis,<br />

if emotions were to be attributed to insects.<br />

What this work illustrates is <strong>the</strong> ability to readily integrate a range of<br />

motivational variables, some of which might be construed as emotions (reluctantly,<br />

due to concerns over <strong>the</strong> inherent looseness of this term, as mentioned<br />

at <strong>the</strong> beginning of this chapter) into a behavior-based architecture.<br />

<strong>The</strong> net effect is that <strong>the</strong> behaviors are no longer solely driven by external<br />

perceptions but now also by internal state. <strong>The</strong>se states can be affected by
