!¡";TRIl DUCC IÓN Un viaje en el tiempo Vivimos sobre un viejo planeta, y ésta es su historia. No es un a historia hecha a la medida del hombre, un invitado de última hora que, incluso cuando rastrea sus propios orígenes, se limita a arañar la superficie del pasado. El planeta ha vivido largo tiempo - miles de millones de años- sin nosotros, y segu irá viviendo sin nosotros cuando el hombre ya no exista. Los científicos de la Tierra buscan pistas como detectives del pasado y diagnostican dolencias como médicos del futuro. Armados con herramientas de alta tecnología, pero sobre todo con la altís ima tecn ología de un cerebro superdesarrollado por la evolución -el famoso sen tido común- , han logrado increíbles reconstrucciones de hechos que literalmente se pierd en en la noche de los tiempos -cuando el Sol apenas alumbraba-; y se atreven, aun admitiendo sus limitaciones, a predecir el porvenir del planeta. Este relato tiene por tanto la estructura de un viaje al pasado, con una tímida incursión final en el futu ro. Pero este viaje no sería realista si no incluyese las peripecias de los historiadores. El libro será por ello un entretejido de las búsquedas, peleas, éxitos y fracasos de los científicos que investigan la Tierra junto con los 11
