This paper <strong>de</strong>scribes a latin-ameritan experi<strong>en</strong>ce on the teaching-learning<br />

process in a distance graduate course on software <strong>en</strong>gineering, the didactic<strong>al</strong><br />

aspects are discussed, the curricula of the course is consi<strong>de</strong>red, some<br />

statistics of the project are pres<strong>en</strong>ted and provisory conclusions outlined.<br />

1. INTRODUCTION<br />

The <strong>de</strong>velopm<strong>en</strong>t of the mo<strong>de</strong>rn communication methods is producing new<br />

work mod<strong>al</strong>ities among those which starts to emerge the “distance work”<br />

concept where a person, without be moved of his household and through the<br />

means of communication, accomplishes his labor for the company in the one<br />

which works, through a flow “of informatíon”.<br />

Obviousiy these changes, burst upon the field of the teaching being coined<br />

terms, <strong>al</strong>ready of common use, such as “virtu<strong>al</strong> classroom “. As in the case of<br />

the m<strong>en</strong>tioned employee, the stud<strong>en</strong>t, without be moved his place, “lives a<br />

similar re<strong>al</strong>ity” to the one which are accustomed with our classic teaching<br />

methods where the professor exchanges knowledge with stud<strong>en</strong>ts that are<br />

found contiguous to him.<br />

We said contiguous stud<strong>en</strong>ts to the professor in the s<strong>en</strong>se of ,the fact that, SO<br />

much they as the professor, are found few meters one of the other.<br />

AS a previous step to the “virtu<strong>al</strong> classroom” exist <strong>al</strong>ready, what is known as<br />

Op<strong>en</strong> Universities, where the stud<strong>en</strong>t studies his career without his physic<strong>al</strong><br />

pres<strong>en</strong>ce in the studies c<strong>en</strong>ter [García Martínez et <strong>al</strong>., 1991; García Martínez &<br />

Marsiglio, 1991; Garcia Martínez & Perichinsky, 1996a].<br />

The knowledge exchange is produced through use of <strong>al</strong>l the means of<br />

communication known, such as the telephone, the data nets and other. In the<br />

societies that they have implem<strong>en</strong>ted this study mod<strong>al</strong>ity is being producing a<br />

massive increase in the level of knowledge transmission, preparing them for<br />

the immediate future ìn the one which <strong>al</strong>ready is perceived that will be gone<br />

producing <strong>de</strong>ep modifications in the relative levels among the countries. Those<br />
