From a company’s perspective, such research constitutes study of not only specific consumer groups but also of competition from other businesses, for the purpose of defining a projected market for a product or range of products. Consumer research is closely linked to the concept of utility: many organizations assume they know what a consumer wants from their products, and yet this assumption often proves to be inaccurate. Consumer research is related to the activity of marketing research (Marketingforschung), which focuses on gathering and analysing information about the ways in which goods and services are moved from the producer to the consumer. The related but distinct activity of market research (Marktforschung) refers to the process of conducting surveys in order to gather all manner of information about markets. "Qualitative market research" generally refers to consumer research (e.g. interviews, focus groups) that is conducted with a very small number of consumers, either in groups or individually. While the results from such research are considered to be neither representative of consumers in general nor projectable, they are nonetheless frequently used to ascertain initial consumer needs and to obtain initial reactions to an organization’s ideas and concepts. Alternatively, quantitative consumer research – often in the form of surveys – is research conducted with a large enough sample of consumers to generate what are considered to be statistically reliable results, which can then be used to project outcomes to the general consumer population. Such research is generally used to determine the relative importance of different customer needs, the performance ratings of and customer satisfaction with current products, and so forth. Consumer research is one of the core tools (Kern-Tools) used in PROSA. PROSA applies the classic methods and tools of consumer research such as interviews, focus group workshops etc. It concentrates particularly, however, upon target groups, patterns of use and 48

Differences to the classic consumer research approach result mainly in terms of new questions (stronger focus on utility and on the use phase of products, greater integration with the findings of environmental life-cycle assessment (LCA), social life-cycle assessment (SLCA) and life-cycle costing). 49
