Office providing methodological expertise in self-directed learning (AMsL)
I. Problem
Most learners and many teachers don’t have the prerequisites
to take responsibility for their learning processes
because they concentrate themselves too much on the contents
and the learning results. They can’t imagine that learning
goals and paths are supposed to be a product of agreements
and refexion. That is why we also offer courses for
teachers in the learning centre AMsL. Our goal is to give
them, as well as the learners, the tools for self-directed learning.
The office area is multifunctional and mirrors the workshop
characteristics: one work place for the AMsL team, one place
for counselling, a room for learning in a group, and two
computers for individual trainings and research on the
internet. The learning centre AMsL is in the Braunschweig
public library and thus appeals to those interested in education.

II. Solution approach
The office makes a contribution to mediating self-directed
and media competence for learners and teachers in the
region, tests new ideas for learn counselling, and thus supports
the process from teacher to “learner guide”. At regular
planning meetings we can develop programme offers
which are directed at individual learners, at groups of learners
as well as teachers and counsellors.
We offer a timely and interesting variety of programmes,
from the one hour “speaking training” to the
2-day seminar “gender training”, from the individual
counselling to group offers for 50 or more people.
We are continually extending the offers at our learning centre
and are successively increasing the share of fee-based
offers.

Examples are:
• Experience to be experienced – Didactic afternoons for
self-learning in lesson processes (aimed at pedagogues
who would like to adopt certain tools and exchange information
with colleagues. The methods which are presented
in the lessons are universally relevant).
• Foreign language teaching and learning – but how?
Didactic afternoons for course leaders and teachers
(content includes the expert discussion about experiences
in teaching, especially about forms of self-direction in
foreign language lessons).
• Learning-type tests for teachers and learners
• Workshops for learn counselling (The aim is to get to
know different learning needs and the appropriate way to
learn and to apply that to one’s own learning).
