GUIDANCE FOR LIFELONG LEARNING
Leipzig learns – A Region Undergoing Change (Saxony)
Info Centres in the Learning Region Leipzig
I. Problem
In the region, large sections of the population are affected
by changes on the employment market. They have to continue
their education to be able to fulfil new qualification
requirements.
II. Solution approach
Our task is to promote self-organised learning and to help
members of the population cope with difficult living conditions
by introducing them to regional education programmes
and, if necessary, developing new, demand-based
services.
To provide the kind of support that is geared directly at
helping people cope with everyday problems, we are setting
up a network of Information Centres (i-Punkte) – agencies
that provide information and advice. The Info Centres coordinate
education programmes and requirements and also
offer advice on individual schooling programmes and
careers.
In addition to counselling services aimed at specific target
groups, the Info Centres also provide information about the
network's educational programmes. The funding agents
and staff of the Info Centres are assisted by a pool of experts
whose qualifications are ascertained by the network management.
III. Outlook
Our long-term aim is to establish our lifelong learning support
services in the social environment in such a way that
people recognise and use these forms of education and
learning as a means of solving problems.
Financing occurs in a variety of forms including subsidies or
schemes initiated by the Employment Office and through
funds provided by funding associations and companies. The
long-term availability and development of counselling services
requires the continual participation of suppliers of
education programmes and counselling services.
We are also developing seven target-group-specific model
profiles, for example, for students and their reference persons
in southern Leipzig:
• development, coordination and presentation of activities
aimed at offering young adults early career orientation
through a network of schools, local companies and
associations
• examples: career orientation events, open-days in
companies, creation of an internship exchange,
application training or help with applications, method
training "learning strategies and presentation
techniques" for students,
• schooling and career guidance for students and young
adults to promote early career orientation
