New Bridges to the Job
I. Problem
III. Outlook
Boys and girls in our region with a migration background find
it much more difficult to participate in education, vocational
orientation and training. Lacking co-ordination between the
institutions of general and vocational education often leads
to breaks and failures in the individual educational biographies.
II. Solution approach
A wide range of new vocational orientation modules for
girls and boys from 7th to 9th grade have been developed,
tested, modified and improved. They represent a new
method to work with the target group providing an early orientation
in vocational training already at the school level.
Within the meaning of "gender mainstreaming", girls are
introduced to technical, manual and IT-related professions
in single-sex groups. In addition, the network establishes
new education forms at the interface between educational
sectors. So it is planned to provide links to blended learning
opportunities in the course of the project, mainly in order to
improve literacy and linguistic competencies.
After successfully testing the models, we plan to:
• establish long-term cooperation with local companies
• discuss and try out new ways of helping school-leavers
make the transition to the working world with chambers
and employers (e.g. one-year accompanying placement
or partial qualification by companies)
• publish a manual and transfer: career orientation at
schools in cooperation with the youth welfare services – a
model for full-time schools
• career orientation centre at school – a model for full-time
school

The subjects of the modules are:
• test and application training,
• Company research/company inquiry (48 regional
companies were involved in the week-long seminar to
establish early and systematic contacts to the working
reality of potential (apprenticeship)employers),
• Life planning (the connection between perspectives in life
and work are worked out in small groups).
• Individual guidance until the first year of apprenticeship
(in individual cases)
