KinderLernwelt - Kindergarten and Primary Schools Make Children Strong
I. Problem
The transition from kindergarten to primary school is often
experienced as a very abrupt one by children and parents
because there is a lack of systematic cooperation between
the two systems, and there are also no universally valid standards
for such a cooperation.
Cooperative work between elementary education and
primary schools is the key to the early and continual promotion
of children. The child-oriented and age-based forms of
promotion which have already proven effective on the elementary
level have to be pursued continually in primary
schools so that children experience the start of school as the
continuation of an ongoing process of education.
• planning special events with “Best Practice Projects” from
elementary and primary education,
• devising a further training concept which applies to all
funding agencies and systems for kindergarten and
school teachers, and
• revising and re-testing the developed and tested concept
for the counselling of parents of four-year-old children.
This process is being evaluated and the results will be
secured.

II. Solution approach
The aim of the KinderLernwelt and all players in Essen is to
systematise the many good examples of cooperation that
exist between day nurseries and primary schools, and to
make these standards in educational work.
The “Future workshop” consisting of kindergarten teachers
and teaching staff is endeavouring to develop thematic
focuses for educational practice, such as an “encounter”
year for pre-school and primary school children or the
examination of diagnosis procedures with regard to their
use in elementary and primary education.
The “group of experts” is represented by players from
local government, education authorities and the public
health department, etc. It systematically examines all concepts,
recommendations and decrees which currently influence
the work of elementary and primary education, developing
a recommendation for a uniform procedure for all
institutions in Essen.
The cooperation of the networks has resulted in a recommendation
entitled ”Joint Responsibility for Education:
Kindergarten and Primary School - Places for Education and
Learning“. It was presented at a special event with the same
name, which was attended by 400.
The contents of the recommendation will be included in the
training of kindergarten and school teachers with the aim of
preparing them for practical work. From the 2005/2006 academic
year, these concepts will be implemented throughout
Essen, and thus guarantee an increasing cooperation
between kindergarten and primary schools.
Based on numerous practical models, recommendations for
further courses of action will also be proposed and submitted
to political representatives.
