Selected telephony and data communications terms commonly used in DSLnetworking are also included.AADSL Asymmetrical DSL. DSL scheme inwhich upstream and downstream data ratesare different, typically with the downstreamchannel running much faster than theupstream channel.address A character string used as a uniqueidentifier, usually of a specific location, <strong>user</strong>,machine, or logical name.agent An active object with a specific purpose.See SNMP Agent.AIS Alarm Indication Signal used in DS1 andDS3 status messages.alarm An event category that requires anoperator’s attention.ARP Address Resolution Protocol. A protocolwithin the TCP/IP suite that maps IPaddresses to Ethernet addresses. TCP/IPrequires ARP <strong>for</strong> use with Ethernet.ATM Asynchronous Transfer Mode. A typicallyhigh-speed (T3+) method of wide-areadata transfer in which the in<strong>for</strong>mation is organizedinto cells. Asynchronous in the sensethat there may not be any periodicity in therecurrence of in<strong>for</strong>mation cells originating witha specific end point or <strong>user</strong>.BBERBit Error Rate; also Block Error Rate.boot, bootstrap The process of starting acomputer or a routine, the first few instructionsare sufficient to bring the rest of it’s necessarycomponents into memory.BootP server An external device that providesbootstrap data through the Bootstrap Protocol.bps (bits per second) Measurement unit usedto specify the rate or speed of data communications.Buffer Control Module A module used withthe CE<strong>150</strong> that manages the transfer of databetween the proprietary interface to the DSLModules, and between the PC interface and theSystem Control Module.CCCV C-bit Coding Violation Error (<strong>for</strong> C-bitParity and SYNTRAN DS3 applications).CE <strong>CopperEdge</strong>.
