LLAN Local Area Network. A short distancenetwork used to link computers and peripheraldevices under standard control. LANs allowusers to access centralized servers and anyoneon the LAN can send messages to and workjointly with others on the LAN.LCV Line Coding Violation (a class of DS3error).LMI Local Management Interface. A FrameRelay specification related to informationexchange between network devices (bridges, routers, etc.).LOSMDS1 and DS3 Loss of signal message.MAC address Media Access Control address.A unique 48-bit character string (address) permanentlyassigned to an individual device atthe time of manufacture.Mbps Megabits per second, used to denote adata rate. A rate of 1 Mbps is 1 x 10 6 bits persecond.MIB Management Information Base. A set ofvariables forming a database contained in anSNMP-managed node on a network. SNMPmanagers can fetch/store information from/tothis database.MIO Multiplexed Input/Output. A termapplied to CE150 network interfaces.multilink A technique in which data to or froma single endpoint is divided into multiplestreams and transported over multiple physicallinks, effectively multiplying the transmissionrate. See IMUX.Nnode A point where connection may beachieved into a network. In practical terms, anode is usually the site of a switch or router.Ooctet An eight-bit data byte. An IP address iscomprised of four octets, each ranging in numberfrom 0 to 255.operational CE150 A CE150 that is poweredup and passing data (user or management traffic).PPDU Protocol Data Unit. The standard abbreviationused to refer to SNMP protocol packets.PES DS3 P-bit Errored Seconds. One secondof time in which one or more P-bit coding violations, frame defects or incoming alarm signalsoccur.PII Permanent Interface Identifier. A characterstring that provides a means of relating aphysical interface location to its correspondingnetwork identifiers (IP address, MAC address,etc.).PIIs are formatted as c.ss.pp.uuuu. Where c isthe chassis (shelf) number, ss is the slot numberon the CE150 where the interface terminates,pp is the port number of the interface. Ifa virtual circuit is associated with the interface, uuuu is an identifying number for the virtualcircuit, if applicable. For example, the PII 1.3.2.27 refers to systemshelf 1, the WAN card in Slot 3 of that shelf, port number 2, and a virtual circuit with aDLCI or ATM Virtual Link number of 27.PPPPoint-to-Point Protocol.protocol A set of rules relating to the formatand timing of data transmission betweendevices. In packet-switched networks, protocolsbreak a lengthy message into equal partscalled packets. The packets are transmittedacross the network, the receiving processorthen error-checks them, and returns anacknowledgment to the originating device.protocol interface While a PII points to andfocuses on a physical interface (a port or connector),a protocol interface is a logical namefor any interface through which packet datepasses: a physical port (DSL, Ethernet, etc.), ora virtual circuit. A protocol interface may takethe form of a full PII (always including a circuitidentifier), or it may simply be the logical name(cmName, IfName) assigned to that interface.PSES DS3 P-bit Severely Errored Second. One second of time in which 44 or more P-bitcoding violations, frame defects or incomingalarm signals occur.&RSSHU(GJH,QVWDOODWLRQDQG2SHUDWLQJ*XLGH
