DTE Data Terminal Equipment. In defininginterface standards for connection of equipmentto a network, the classification of a deviceas Data Communications Equipment (typicallya modem or printer) or Data Terminal Equipment(typically a computer or remote terminaldevice) determines the wiring of the interfaceconnector. Network interfaces on the CE150(Ethernet and WAN) are wired as DTE.EEthernet A local area network used for connectingcomputers and peripheral devices overshort distances and using private facilities.Ethernet operates over twisted pair wire orcoaxial cable at rates to 10 Mbps or 100 Mbps.Event An indication of an occurrence that anoperator may want to know about.Ffilter A logical construct that allows selectivereception or blocking of data packets based onthe criteria (such as the IP address of the originator)assigned and built into the filter specification.Frame Relay A high-performance sharedbandwidthpacket-switching protocol, whichhas become the de-facto standard in wide-areadata communications.FTPHFile Transfer Protocol.HDIA High Density Internet Access. Anetworking model that allows separate voiceand data circuits on DSL and WAN ports andthat provides economical use of IP addressing.Itrequires that you set up base IPaddresses and address ranges (or net masks)for voice and data subnets on WAN ports aswell as on DSL ports for IADs and CPEs andtheir hosts.HDSL High-rate Digital Subscriber Line. Originallyreferred to DSL links at T1 (1.544 Mbps)and E1 (2.048 Mbps) rates. This use of theterm is becoming less common, however, asDSL rates have generally increased.host A processor (computer) that providesservices such as database access or computationto other devices. In commands used toconfigure a CE150, host may refer to an externalfile server or work station, or to the CE150itself, depending upon the operational organizationof the site.IIAD Integrated Access Device. A special typeof CPE that provides dual circuits, accommodatingdigitized on one circuit and regular dataon the other. On the upstream side, both circuitscommunicate with a CE150 over anSDSL line. On the downstream, for voice, POTSlines interface with the IAD; for data, an Ethernetline interfaces with the IAD.IDSL DSL service in which the data rates arethose used in ISDN services (64, 128, or 144Kbps). IDSL services typically allow longerloops between the CPE and COE, and mayallow use of existing ISDN CPE in the DSL system.IMUX An acronym for Inverse Multiplexing, atechnique by which data from a single sourceis separated into multiple streams for transmissionover multiple physical links, effectivelymultiplying the throughput available to anindividual subscriber.interface A point of demarcation (may bephysical or logical) between two devices wherethe electrical signals, connectors, timing andhandshaking are defined. It can also refer tothe procedures, codes, and protocols thatenable a connection and exchange of informationbetween two entities.IP address Internet Protocol address. A 32-bitaddress assigned to hosts using TCP-IP. Theaddress is written as four octets that denotethe addressee’s network, subnet, and hostlocation.IRB Integrated Router/Bridge. A special operatingmode of certain routers that allows therouter to support virtual bridge groups, andwhich thus enables the CE150 Virtual WideArea Network (VWAN) capability.ISDN Integrated Services Digital Network. ACCITT standard for a digital network as implementedand delivered by telecommunicationscommon carriers.$SSHQGL[)*ORVVDU\
