188 History of Medical Practice in IllinoisA paper on obstruction of the bowel was given by Dr. W. H. Veatch ofCarthage. He listed 12 causes, and mentioned the fact that several Americanand English surgeons had adopted a policy of watchful expectancy usingenemata, belladonna, warm olive oil and even mercury into the rectum.1886There were discussions on tubal pregnancy, litholapaxy (Dr. EdmundAndrews), and rabies and its treatment by the Pasteur method. The uncertaintyand inefficiency of the "mad stone" and its application wereexposed. Some of Pasteur's statements were seriously questioned.1887In opening the discussions of the meeting, Dr. E. P. Cook put thesequestions: "In what proportion of our cases of carcinoma of the stomachshould we resort to resection"; "how to locate abscesses of the brain"; "howcan we destroy bacteria without destroying the unfortunate one infectedwith them?"Dr. D. A. K. Steele made the report for the Committee on Surgery. Hesaid that progress in surgery was rapid and that an answer to Dr. Cook'squeries would be like trying to give the history of the world in ten minutes.He spoke of Dr. Block of Quincy who, after many experimental pneumonectomieson animals, was so chagrined at the death of a female relative(his first human patient) upon whose lung he performed an apical resectionthat after a medicolegal inquiry and criticism, he committed suicide! Dr.Steele also spoke of some of the year's publications: Wyeth's "Textbook onSurgery"; the Transactions of the American Surgical Association whichincluded Senn's article on "Surgery of the Pancreas," and Ashhurst's"International Encyclopedia of Surgery." He said that the Annals ofSurgery maintained its supremacy as the only journal in the English languagewhich was devoted primarily to surgery. He spoke of cocaine as a localanesthetic, and of surgical pathology as a real advance in surgical science,giving credit to such Chicago men as Fenger, Senn, Curtis, Belfield,Ochsner, Billings and others. He mentioned fungi, cocci, schizomycetes,actinomyces, and anthrax, and discussed osteomyelitis, pyemia, erysipelas,tuberculosis and "white thrombus" in blood vessels. Also included wasdiscussion on antiseptics in surgery and the nature of pus. The cleansingof hands was stressed as the most vital point in the practice of antisepticsurgery, with the additional comment that all surgical instruments shouldbe made of a single solid piece of metal. He reviewed the antiseptics of theday, and then quoted from Parkes's article in the Annals of Surgery onpneumonectomy and thoracoplasty with their indications also on neph-
General Surgery 189rotomy, nephrectomy, wound healing, amputation and fractures. He relatedan instance of bone pegging for a fracture of the neck of the femur.An incision was made over the greater trochanter and an external plasterof paris dressing was used postoperatively. Three nights later the patientgot out of bed to get a drink of water, fell on the cast and broke the bonetransplant, thus opening the wound and spoiling the reduction as theeverted foot returned. This was probably the first operation in Illinois bybone transplant, at least to correct fracture of the neck of the femur.The meeting was held at Rock Island and had no special report onsurgery.1889The meeting was held in Jacksonville. Here appeared as delegates suchmen as Drs. Franklin H. Martin, Junius C. Hoag, D. W. Graham, Carl E.Black and Mary H. Thompson. Dr. N. S. Davis said, in responding to thespeech of welcome and thinking of the 2nd annual meeting which he hadattended in Jacksonville in 1852:"I did not start from Chicago last nightand be here this morning to breakfast. I had a journey by stage of one day,and a good part of a night, then a ride on the Illinois River, then anotherpiece of a ride on the construction train of a railroad on top of a load ofties, part way to Jacksonville, and I think we came into the city on a stagecoach. That made the journey which was illustrative of the differences inthe times, that a few years have made." Dr. Davis spoke also of a trip toNew York by way of stage coaches in 1846 to lay the foundation of theNational Medical Association and said: "It took me as long, by the then bestmeans to travel, to go from Binghampton (N.Y.) to New York City toattend that as it would take now to go from Chicago to San Francisco andit was a great deal more tiresome."Dr. John H. Hollister of Chicago, Chairman of the new BiographicalCommittee, reported that this committee "should preserve the materialfrom year to year which shall in the future biography correctly representthe history of our medical men. . Your committee would respectively. .suggest that such a biographical history may be published, very appropriatelyat the end of the century, ten years hence."The report on surgery was given by Dr. L. L. McArthur of Chicago. Hisfirst remarks were on the Thiersch skin graft using a heavy razor blade andsurgical dressings. He abhorred iodoform. He continued with a discussionof the surgical procedures of suprapubic cystotomy, joint surgery (arthrectomyhad come into use) and hydrocele. Of the literature, he spoke admiringlyof Senn's work on intestinal surgery.Dr. J.S. Miller of Peoria gave a supplementary report on surgery, cover-
