gooHistory of Medical Practice in IllinoisJonesboro; F. S. Dodds, Anna, and W. L. McLane, Dongola. Dr. Hacker,then President of the Union County Medical Society, presided. He wasinstructed to send a call to the physicians of southern Illinois for a meetingto be held in Jonesboro in January, 1875. On January 20, 1875, the organizationmeeting was held. Dr. Hacker was chosen as President and Dr. Agnewas Secretary pro tern. Fourteen physicians were present. A committee wasappointed by the President to draw up a suitable Constitution and By-Lawsand, after their report was heard, the following officers were elected:President: H. C. Hacker, Jonesboro1st Vice-President: H. Wardner, Cairo2nd Vice-President: John McLeace, DuQuoinSecretary: G. W. Schuchardt, JonesboroTreasurer: W. C. Lence, JonesboroMeetings were held twice each year until 1901, when the By-Laws wereamended to make it an annual meeting of two days. The Association hasheld meetings each year until more recently it was decided to make it aone-day affair. A list of the officers of this organization contains names ofmany who have been prominent in the affairs of the Illinois State MedicalSociety.Brainard District Medical Society was organized on May 17, 1877, atMason City. In 1878, three official delegates were sent to the annual meetingof the State Medical Society:Drs. L. L. Leeds, Lincoln; P. L. Diffenbackerand J.W. Newcomer of Havana. The maximum membership apparentlywas reached in 1895, when 57 members were enrolled. In 1900, theofficers were Drs. F. M. Coppel of Havana, President, and Katherine Millerof Lincoln, Secretary. This year the Society was recognized by the Councilof the Illinois State Medical Society.Records still available show that there were a number of medical societiesin Illinois a century ago which held only a few meetings, in a few instancesperhaps only two or three, and then were disbanded. No informationis available as to the exact time and place of their organization, officers,lists of members or other pertinent data.It seems obvious that physicians in Illinois have always been interestedin getting together for an interchange of ideas, and to discuss problems indiagnosis and treatment of prevailing ailments. In those days before theexact cause of infectious and contagious diseases was known, physicians, asthey do today, had the best interests of their patients uppermost in theirthoughts. The attendance at these early meetings was good, even thoughmany hours were spent in going to the meeting and returning home. Occasionallyone of these pioneer physicians ventured to predict what mighthappen to improve medical care and knowledge during the next century,
Early Medical Societies 501and it is almost uncanny to note how many of the things thus predicted havesince actually been developed. Medicine has indeed kept pace with thedevelopments in science, industry and the arts during the past century andwill no doubt continue to maintain this record.
