<strong>Dictionary</strong> <strong>of</strong> language <strong>and</strong> linguistics 346dysgrammatismagrammatismdyslalia [Grk lalía ‘talk, chat’]In the study <strong>of</strong> developmental language disorders, term referring to speech productiondisorders in children, such as syllable reduction, mispronunciation, or substitution <strong>of</strong>individual sounds (partial dyslalia) or <strong>of</strong> many sounds (multiple dyslalia) up to the point<strong>of</strong> unintelligibility (universal dyslalia). A particular kind <strong>of</strong> dyslalia is known asparalalia. Dyslalia is distinguished from dysglossia, a condition which results fromstructural defects, <strong>and</strong> from dysarthria, a condition due to acquired neural impairments.The term ‘dyslalia’ is not currently used in North America.
