Support Group Appeal - refers to the extent to which the program<br />

is visible to, and appeals to, groups capable of providing substantial<br />

current or future support. This variable measures the media coverage<br />

of the sport. The data for this variable was obtained from the Israeli<br />

television channel that covers this sport. The average frequency with<br />

which the sport appeared on television for the year 2001-2002 was<br />

used as an indicator of support group appeal.<br />

Equipment Costs - refers to the costs associated with the<br />

equipment participants need to obtain in order to actively compete in a<br />

sport at the introductory level. This imperative only takes into account<br />

the equipment that must be purchased by the participant. The data was<br />

obtained by conducting a telephone survey among a sample of the<br />

three major sports equipment suppliers in Israel; the two extremes<br />

were taken (the cheapest and the most expensive).<br />

Affiliation fees - refers to the affiliation costs associated with<br />

participation in a particular sport, in this case - beach volleyball, at the<br />

initial level of competition. i.e. access to training facilities and<br />

competitions. The data was obtained from the person in charge of<br />

managing the beach volleyball competitions.<br />

Secondary Data<br />

Internal sources - the infrastructure of the beach volleyball<br />

organisation, number of members, tournaments, participants and<br />

amount of money allocated for beach volleyball from the IVA.<br />

Coaches, officials, members of the board of directors, members of the<br />

executive committee.<br />

External sources – Israeli Ministry of Education, Culture and<br />

Sport, media coverage of beach volleyball for 2001-2002, catalogues<br />

containing the prices for beach volleyball equipment and phone calls<br />

made to those sport shops.<br />

Analysis of Data<br />

The results of the data collected were compared with a<br />

classification scheme offered by Thibault el al, (1994). The analysis of<br />

the data in this form allowed the author to determine the placement of<br />

the beach volleyball organization as high or low scorer, in terms of<br />

program attractiveness and competitive position. According to these<br />

placements, the strategic type of the organisation was determined.<br />
