THE FEDERAL DEBT

The federal debt fell after World War II and rose rapidly after 1982 (panel A). Expressing

the debt relative to GDP, panel B shows that the debt reached a peak relative to the size

of the economy immediately after World War II, rose between 1982 and 1996, and

declined from 1996 until 2000.
