Fill configuration has a direct effect on the tower coefficient. An efficient fill has a greater surface<br />

area per unit volume a, which means more contact surfaces, a longer contact time, <strong>and</strong> intimate<br />

contact between <strong>air</strong> <strong>and</strong> water. Currently, two types <strong>of</strong> fill are widely used in cooling towers for<br />

<strong>air</strong> <strong>conditioning</strong> systems: splash bars, as shown in Fig. 10.15a, <strong>and</strong> the more recently developed
