Among these youths was a studentstill<br />

wearing his cap from the University of Warsawnamed<br />

Motek Ivri (z"1), who evidently was an<br />

active member of the HaShomer HaTsair movement<br />

in Congress Poland, and thanks to him we<br />

can be proud of the HaShomer HaTsair movement<br />

in our town. In a short time this movement<br />

included most of the young people from the ages<br />

of 13 to 17. Out of this group came the nucleus for<br />

a local branch of HeChalutz and the impetus to<br />

found the first Hebrew school, through which<br />

some youngsters were inspired to learn Hebrew<br />

(mostly on their own) even before the school was<br />

opened.<br />

The writer of these lines, together with his<br />

friends Bebik Veyner (later on in Palestine he<br />

called himself Doy Gafni), Leibele Melamed,<br />

(who was murdered, with other victims in Russia,<br />

by the cruel tyrant Stalin and his cohorts),<br />

Zalman Fisher, Yitshak Schneider (Itche the<br />

Scribe's son), may they know a long and good life,<br />

Nathan Blumen-Tchelet (Nute the Schochet's<br />

son), Eliyohu Frechter, and others, was among<br />

the first to meet in secret with the older comrade<br />

Motek Ivri to discuss the nature of the movement.<br />

These discussions soon became lessons on the<br />

aims of the movement and the means of realizing<br />

them, as well as marching drills and actual prac-<br />
