orchard. We often became involved in heated
debates. Leybish Perl was a kind of political
commissar to us. Our patrons on behalf of the
party were Motl Privner, Leyzer Finkelshteyn,
and Shmuel Royter.
Of special inspiration to our town's kibbutz
hachshara [preparation camp for agriculture]
were the chalutzim who came from outof-town.
This kibbutz was located near the
flour mill owned by Grimatlicht and his partners.
The kibbutz members had to support
themselves by working, and Luboml was not
an industrial town. Conditions for providing
employment were poor.
Some of our kibbutz members found work at
Chayim Kroyt's lumber mill. They were less productive
than the other workers. But Chayim used
to say: "That's O.K. The Zionist movement has
already cost me so much money. Let it cost me a
little more."
LIFE, RECONSTRUCTION, AND CREATIVITY 127
With the help of local Zionists, kibbutz members
got work chopping wood for heating. And so
they helped us, and we helped them by cutting
down trees and making boards and lumber.
I remember also a black Friday in Luboml, the
day that Efrayim Gelbord was murdered. It happened
between eight and nine in the morning,
when bands of drunken hooligans attacked some
Jewish storekeepers selling fruits and vegetables.
The hooligans began to break up the stalls and
scatter the produce. And when Efrayim ran out to
chase them away, one of them drew a switchblade
knife and killed him on the spot. A dramatic chase
after the rioters began at once, with all the other
young people of the town participating; but the
murderer hid in the attic of one of the houses. The
people kept a watch on him until the police came
and took him away. The arrangements for
Efrayim's funeral were made the very same day,
and the whole town fell into deep mourning.
