ported HaShomer HaTsair transferred their sympathies
and their support to the new organization.
One can well understand that this did not do
HaShomer HaTsair any good.
HeChalutz, which operated under General
Zionist slogans, though in its ideals it leaned
toward Labor Zionism, attracted a great many
Jewish youth of the town. Among the first of
those who made aliyah [went to settle in Israel],
even before the founding of the HeChalutz
in 1920-21, were Motl Grimatlicht and Hershl
Fuks (may his soul rest in peace).
When HeChalutz was established in 1921,
some of its members began to work at
hachsharah (preparatory training for prospective
Grimatlicht [changed his name to Yisroel Garmi];
after them (1924-25), Elye Frechter, Bebik Veyner
[changed to Gafni, may he rest in peace], Sheyndl
Yafe, Malke Krayzer, Leybish Gleizer, Henech
Kornfracht, Moyshe Lederson, Yisrolke
Yeruchems, Yakov Mayzels, and others.
It is important to note that, before all the
or folkhealer) and his family went to Israel
to settle. They had left the shtetl when World War
I broke out and went to Odessa, and from there
they made aliyah to Israel; at the same time,
during the aliyah campaign of the Yesomey
Belkind, Ch. Shildergemeyn also left for Israel.
