98 LUBOML
Bornshteyn was not from Luboml, but had married
a woman from the town). They were a small
but vocal minority, and they insisted that the
ledger be returned. The correspondence stretched
out over a number of years and this writer, as
secretary of the community (Va'ad HaKehilla)
was charged with the task.
Dr. Shipper suggested all sorts of solutions: a
monetary reimbursement or valuable museum
piece for the ledger; he also suggested supplying
a handwritten or photocopy so that the original
could stay in Jerusalem.
All these solutions were rejected by those
who saw themselves as caretakers of a ledger
that, inter alia, dealt with matters relating to crafts-
Dear. Tchelet,
In answer to your undated letter, we
herebyreply.
We once had the ledger of the tailors
guild in Luboml or the years 1720-1780. It
was sent to Luboml in 1935, upon request,
butto ourregret, it was notretumed, and we
therefore determine that it has been lost.
We have some printed archival material,
and it may yet be possible to find other
literature on the history of the community
in the bibliography of the Encyclopedia
Judaica, Eshkol Publications, Berlin, vol.
10, p. 1171. Some ofthat material is in our
libraiy. You can visit us any. day. We suggest
the first visit be during our working hours,
i.e., before 2:30 p.m. Our reading room is
open until 10 p.m.
Yours truly,
Dr. Y. Yoel
Translation of letter to Nathan Tchelet from Jewish
National and University Library.
men, and they demanded the return of the original
book. In the en d, under the threat of police
action or resort to judicial procedure against him
personally by exploiting the written receipt and
guarantee that he had given of his own volition at
the time, Dr. Shipper was forced to request that
the Hebrew University Library return the ledger
to the Va'ad HaKehilla.
The ledger was returned in or around 1938
[or 1935; see letter below], and, of course, you
know the end. Its fate was that of the Jews of the
city, of whom only a few remained, a shadow of
the life that had been. From the ledger, too, only
a few fragments (barely a shadow) remain.
