MEMORIAL PRAYER
IN MEMORY OF THE HOLOCAUST MARTYRS
The following prayer is read at the completion of
a chapter or a tractate of the Talmud, or during
a memorial meeting for those who died in the
Holocaust.
Hear, 0 Lord, who art full of mercy, who hast
given a soul to every living thing with Thy Hand,
and who put the breath of life into the body of
man. May it be Thy will, for the sake of our Torah
and our prayer, to look down upon the souls
of Thy people Israel, myriads of them! the old
and the young; men, women, and children who
were slaughtered for the sanctification of Thy
name; who were butchered, strangled, and
burned to ashes by the German murderers (may
their memory be wiped off the face of this earth).
The victims were like the cedars of Lebanon, the
mighty in the Torah; they were pure and holy,
the heads of yeshivas and their congregations in
the holy communities; they delivered their souls
for the sanctification of Thy name. For the sake
of our dear ones who died before their time, may

Thou remember them for good, 0 God, the remnant
of the righteous of the world, and avenge
Thou the blood of Thy servants that was spilled.
As it is written in the Torah of Moses, the man
of God: "Hear ye, gentile nations, that the blood
of My servants shall arise and will avenge the
enemy, and that He shall forgive His people and
His land." As Thy servants, the prophets, wrote,
"And I shall avenge their blood and I shall dwell
in Zion!" And it is written in the Holy Books,
"Why did the gentiles ask, 'Where is their God?'
And it is known by the gentiles, as witnessed by
our eyes, that vengeance comes for the spilled
blood of My servants."
May their souls be bound in the bonds of
eternal life; and may they rest in peace together
with all the other dead people of Israel. And do
so in Thy memory; and send us the Messiah, the
Righteous One, to deliver us from exile; and
gather us from the four corners of the earth into
our land; and may we be found worthy of the
final redemption in a very short time, Amen!
