As soon as the Russian army left, we immediately
ran away from Libivne. For as soon as the Germans
appeared, we knew things would be terrible
for us; And that no matter how dangerous it
was to start wandering around during these dangerous
times, no matter how risky, it would be
much less risky than finding ourselves in the
clutches of the Nazis.
We were further encouraged to flee by the fact
that we had gotten hold of false Polish papers,
provided to us by Yisrolik Dubelman, who was
working in a Ukrainian printing shop.
Only one path was open to us: Russia. And
so we decided to go toward Kharkov, since the
wife of a Kharkov veterinarian had given us the
address of her parents. We stayed there only
two days, because the woman was afraid to
keep us longer.
WITH AN "ARYAN" FACE
By Esther Brod Milshteyn.
297
On the way back, I and my daughter Rivke
stopped in Lemberg. I remained there the entire
time till the end of the war, living on my false
papers. This succeeded because of my Aryan
looks.
When I returned to Libivne after the war, I
found the entire Jewish community destroyed
and almost all the former Jewish houses in ruins.
I met there several Jews who had been able to
save themselves: Zelde Listhoyz, Chayim
Listhoyz, Velvl Sheynvald, Moyshe the
shoemaker's son, a woman from the village of
Lubochin, Yidl Sandlboym with his children and
his sister Rochl, Boruch Trachtenberg and Moyshe
Geyer. Later on a few more Jews from Libivne
joined us. My husband, Motl Milshteyn, was
killed six months after the war began. A peasant
betrayed him.
