Everyone joined in the hunt after the unfortunate
Jews who sought refuge in the forest.
All took part in the persecution: the educated
and the ignorant, the intelligent and the foolish,
the rich and the poor, Komsomol youths
and members of fascist organizations, believers
and atheists, teachers and shepherds, the
aged, even women and children. The bones of
our martyrs lie scattered throughout the area's
forests to this day.
Of all those who had escaped, between 30
and 35 succeeded in hiding and remaining alive.
Among them were 10 children between the ages
of 10 and 12. One infant only a few weeks old
whose parents had left her in a park on the night
of the massacre was found by a local nun and
handed over for adoption to a childless couple as
a Christian child born out of wedlock.
All those captured in the city were brought
for slaughter to a place situated about 2 miles
from the city. There, four huge pits already had
been prepared, each 165 feet long, 20 feet wide,
and 16 feet deep. The Jews of the city had been
ordered to dig these pits several weeks before the
massacre. They had been told that brick-ovens
were to be erected on this site. But they were
digging their own graves.

The murderers did not spare or take pity on
a single Jewish soul. The punctilious Germans
made sure to gather the clothes and other belongings
of the victims. Before they were killed, the
victims were forced to disrobe completely. Naked,
they were forced to stand in groups around
the edge of the pit and then shot.
Wounded and dying, the unfortunate victims
were covered while still alive with a thin layer of
earth by other Jews who were waiting for their
turn to die in the same manner. In this way many
groups of Jews were murdered, brought to this
place by the murderous Gestapo and Ukrainians.
When the pit was full, it was covered with earth
2 feet deep, and they moved on to the next pit.
They filled four pits with the bodies of 5,000
Jewswomen, men, the elderly, children and infants,
murdered in full view of the world. The
earth with which the graves were covered moved
and shook for many hours, since many of those
buried had fallen into the grave while still alive,
and in their agony struggled violently with death.
In these common graves lie the remains of
our dear onesour parents, brothers, sisters and
children, the martyrs of Luboml and its vicinity.
