The mill and the electricity-producing plant of
the Grimatlichts was a very important factor in
the shtetl's economy. Several Jewish families
peasants who came to the mill to grind flour or to
press oil out of the grain.
An episode that is etched in my memory
thing. The wagoner took a small bundle of hay
from a peasant's cart and gave it to his horse.
Some of the peasants noticed it, fell upon the Jew,
and began to beat him, almost killing him. When
he heard the uproar and the shouts for help, the
strong Avrom Sheyner ran over, grabbed one
peasant with one hand and a second peasant
with the other hand, and knocked their heads
together so that they fell almost unconscious
upon the ground. The rest of the peasants disappeared
at once.
