coffee house with strange men. After they failed
to move me by cunning to attempt to gain my
freedom by bribery or supplication, it is possible
they began to believe that I was truly a Christian
and had nothing to fear from the Gestapo.
At Gestapo headquarters they brought me
into a cell under heavy guard. After talking to the
rest of the women prisoners there, I realized there
was no great hope of my ever escaping from there.
I decided therefore that if I was to be lost, so be it!
I must be firm in my decision and not confess that
I was Jewish!
Sunk as I was in despair, after a while I heard
a loud voice, which interrupted my thoughts
calling: "Anna Maria Zawadzka." I calmed my
emotions in order to hide my despair. The guard
led me to a room where an SS man was sittinghe
was a high-ranking officer and had an interpreter
who spoke Polish.
THE STRUGGLE FOR LIFE 295
He tried at first to trap me by speaking to me
in German, to see whether I was a Jew who
understood German. But I stood there innocently,
as if I did not understand anything. Facing the
interpreter who was interpreting what I said, I
asked: "What does the Herr [gentleman] of the
Gestapo wish from me?"
The interrogation lasted a long time. He questioned
me about my Aryan identity card: perhaps
I had bought it; perhaps I was not really Christian.
Finally, they telephoned the concierge at 3
Novgrodska Street to ask whether there was a
tenant there, a Polish Christian by the name of
