for us from 1918-1921 when the various youth<br />

groups, HaShomer HaTsair and HeChalutz, began<br />

their Zionist activities: lecture series and<br />

meetings, founding a Hebrew and Yiddish library,<br />

collecting funds for the Keren HaKayemet<br />

and Keren HaYesod, amateur plays, pioneering<br />

activity in preparation for emigration to Palestine,<br />

All these were viewed by the fanatics as a<br />

deviation from the right path, irresponsibility,<br />

and turning to evil ways, and many times sharp<br />

words were exchanged. Shouts against the "little<br />

Zionists" and their supporters were even heard<br />

in our shtibl, and I was given the name "Yerav'am<br />

ben Navat," as if to say that I was a sinner and was<br />

encouraging others to do the same, on account of<br />

my participation in the youth organizations.<br />
