propagandistic speeches in the same vein, and
the ceremony concluded with the singing of the
"International."
Apart from this group, though he too was
from Chelm, was a student who resided in our
town at that time by the name of Mordche (or
Motek) Ivri. His student cap was from the University
of Warsaw and it drew our attention. He had
a pleasant demeanor and a kind face with delicate
features. All our town's youth were drawn to this
young man.
One day he asked me and my friend, B.
Veyner (z"1), if we could organize a meeting of
some of Luboml's youth. We were very excited
and wanted to please him. After a few days we got
a group of ten boys our age assembled in his room.
He told us all about an organization called
HaShomer HaTsair that had recently been founded
in Congress Poland and Galicia, and that also
had begun to organize in our area of Volhynia
(the so-called Kressy), as well as in Latvia and
Lithuania. He also told us about the goals of this
new organization: to educate boys to be scouts, to
teach Hebrew and to encourage immigration to
Eretz Yisroel.
The young man advised us to join this organization
and promised us that he was willing and
ready to counsel us as long as he remained in our
town. Of course, we were very excited to hear this
suggestion and after a few days we called for a
meeting of our town's youth. At this meeting we
announced the founding of a branch of HaShomer
HaTsair in Luboml.
Under the enthusiastic and spontaneous
instruction of Motek Ivri, who was our teacher
and mentor and who helped us take our first
steps toward reaching our goal, the organization
developed and earned a respectable role
educating Luboml youth about Zionism and
Eretz Yisroel.
