THE SURVIVORS AND THE RETURN TO LIFE 365
neously the people sang HaTikvah (Israel's national
anthem) and the Partisan Hymn. The secretary,
Zelig Faigen, reminded the audience that all those
who had been fortunate enough to escape the Nazi
clutches and had been found worthy enough to see
the creation of the Jewish state must feel a dual obligation
to add their energies to the realization of
the Jewish state.
The president then read a report about the successful
work of the past two years for relief for the
survivors. He pointed out that during that time, the
society had sent 54 packages and 6,000 pesos to
survivors outside Argentina and over 1,500 pesos
to local Argentine landsleit. 1,000 pesos were contributed
to the seven million campaign; 100 pesos
for the Jewish hospital; 100 pesos for the Peretz
Book Fund; 100 pesos for the Paris orphan home;
200 pesos for the Jewish Committee of Cremona;
and smaller donations to other worthwhile institutions.
The report was applauded most heartily.
The society's relief work continued for many
years. The officers had remained almost the sarne
during this time, except for the treasurer, who
from the second year on was a man from Opalin,
Bernard Gershentzweig. The chairman of the society,
Yochanan Bargrum (z"1), had the post for
several years. When the writer of these lines was
chairman, his secretary was Leon Furman. The
work of relief continued for many years under
the old staff of officers.
Recently, the work of relief has become
weaker for several reasons. The economic condition
of the survivors has gradually normalized.
Each one has established himself in his new
homelandIsrael, Argentina, and Americaand
no longer needs our help. We, the activists, have
grown older, and it seems to us that our obligations
have been fulfilled.
The work of the Libivne Society took a new
directionit established a cooperative credit
union. The new credit-cooperative received a license
from the Argentina government and assumed
the name "La Liberal."
