HeChalutz Hatsair, which developed very nicely.
Arye Shtern, the first Israeli representative to
Rome, was one of the first members of HeChalutz
Hatsair in Libivne.
In the mid-thirties, a branch of Ha'Oved was
organized. It was an artisans' organization of the
Labor Zionist movement. It had about 50 members,
10 of whom had made aliyah. The local
HeChalutz helped with organizing Ha'Oved and
leading it. At the regional conference of Ha'Oved
held in Lutsk, the Libivner chapter sent two
, .
representatives, Mendl Varshniter and Berl
Volvushes.
Beitar, organized in 1929, also developed
rapidly and soon became an important force in
the shtetl. Its founder and first mefaked [commander]
was Yitshak Shapiro, and after him
Shmuel Zilberberg. The commanders at different
times of its existence were Yakov Getman, Chayim
Huberman, and Chayim Honig.
Beitar had its own soccer team. It used to play
in matches both with local and outside teams.
This Revisionist youth organization also
formed its own hachsharah-kibbutz in the shtetl.
Two such hachsharah groups were one too many
for such a small shtetl; they led to frequent unbridled
rivalry and competition for the very few
jobs in and about Libivne.
The Beitar hachsharah-kibbutz took in members
only from other towns, while the Beitar
groups in Libivne sent their own members to
complete their hachsharah elsewhere.
There existed also a Brit Hachayal group,
with the following men active in it: Yisroel Kramer,
Many clashes took place between the organizations
of the Revisionists and the Labor Zionists,
especially during party meetings.
Moyshe Lifshitz was the secretary of the
Revisionist Organization for many years.
But despite all the disputes and clashes among
the parties, and despite the tricks they played on
each other, the time between the two world wars
was the best and most interesting for the Jewish
youth of Libivne. It was a time when the national
