THE EXPLOSION IN THE DISTILLERY
The explosion of a steam-boiler [in the distillery]
was a terrible tragedy. It happened on the
22nd day of Av, 1919. The first victim was
Boruch Chesner, one of the workers in the
distillery who was a close relative of Moyshe
Reyzman's family.
The explosion tore him into little bits. The
second victim was Yisroel "Urke" [his nickname],
who suffered for several days before he
died. Large parts of Avrom Lichtmacher's body
were scalded. He was brought to the hospital
in Lublin, where he spent several months
and finally recovered.

The funeral of Boruch Chesner was attended
by the whole town. The leftist youththen under
the leadership of leftist activists from Chelm,
who were agitating for the Bundused the occasion
of the mass funeral to propagandize for the
"class struggle." They carried placards and made
protest speeches against the exploiters of the
working class, etc.
"Honor the fallen worker Chesner" was written
on the placards at the funeral. But in reality, it
was the funeral of one of our own Jews who had
been killed in an accident, and the whole town
came to pay respect to him on his last journey.
