10 LUBOML
writer of Tza'ar Bat Rabim states the number as
744. Reb Mordche of Krezmir estimates the
number of dead at 120,000 souls, MagiRat Eifa
puts the number at "a few thousands," and Tit
HaYavan [by Shmuel Faibisz, son of R. Natan
Fait]] gives yet another number of dead.
In reference to the destruction of the Jews
from Volhynia, the Russian writer Wladimirek
Badanow states that from 1649 to 1652, during
the period of the Chmielnicki uprising, about 90
percent of the local Jewry was killed, among them
the residents of Luboml.
In almost all sources where the events of 1648
and 1649 are discussed, Luboml is referred to as
one of the Jewish communities that perished. In
other contemporary writings, the town of Luboml
is not mentioned by name, but from writings
describing the unfortunate period it is clear that
Luboml, too, was a victim of the Chmielnicki
murders.
In TzukHa-Itim by Meyer Szeberszin, Luboml
is not specifically mentioned. The author talks
about Kremenitz, Lutsk, Ludmir, Dubno, and
Belz. Yet, at the same time, he mentions that "in
northern Chelm and the entire region Jews were
killed."
It is clear that "northern Chelm and the entire
region" includes Luboml, which throughout its
