waited a few hours, but the Judenrat representative
did not return from the district commissar.
At 4:30, the Judenrat representative returned and
informed us our permits had not been extended.
He also confirmed the news that Gestapo and police
from other towns had arrived in town. It became
clear to us the end was near.
On the way home we stopped by to see our
friend Simche Kramer (the watchmaker). He told
us that a few hours earlier the Germans had taken
back all the watches they had brought in for repairs,
even those he could not fix. Later, we met
Yosef Melamed (Yosl Kerpeles) the tailor. He also
told us the Germans had taken back everything
they had given him to sew, even unready garments
that had just been cut. This was done not
only by the Germans but Ukrainians as well. All
these signs were indication of a new action.
The time was a few minutes after five. We
came home and began to prepare a small package
for everyoneunderwear and bread. We decided
to go to an acquaintance of ours, a peasant
who lived 3 miles out of town, on the way to
Masheve.
We locked our home and went to the meadows
behind Yosef Amerikaner's home. There we
lay until midnight. Suddenly, I noticed the old
I crawled over to the stable, identified myself,
and asked him to help us reconnoiter the
road so we could cross. At 2 o'clock in the morning,
the man's son, Nikolai, not only helped us
cross the road but the railroad tracks as well. At
this point, we were about a mile or two from our
destination. After a long search in the dark of
night for the right place, toward morning we finally
arrived at the home of our peasant acquaintance.
The moment we approached Ivan's house, a
dog began to bark. The peasant came out and ordered
us to remain quiet because he did not want
his son to know we were there. In addition, his
neighbor's son was a policeman. He gave us a
place in the barn.
The peasant brought us news from town that
all the Jews had been murdered and that Jews
found in hideouts were being shot everyday. The
Ukrainians participated in searching for and
handing over Jews to the Germans because for
every Jew the Germans paid in sugar and salt.
Among the Jews handed over to the Germans
was Chayim Kroyt, the proprietor of the sawmill.
The peasant told us Chayim Kroyt had hid in the
