We all gathered at the synagogue in which I<br />

worshipped and in the home of Tsvi Fuks (z"1).<br />

We also turned to our brothers in America for<br />

help, but we received no response at the time.<br />

The activities of the committee to help survivors<br />

were still going on when Nathan Blumen<br />

[Tchelet] returned to Tel Aviv. I invited him to<br />

participate in our committee's activities, and he<br />

obliged willingly. In this manner I handed over<br />

to him the responsibilities of the committee and<br />

he began to take over as its leader.<br />

Committee Functions<br />

When Nathan Blumen joined our efforts, the<br />

committee gained impetus. From that moment<br />

on, Nathan and his wife, Malke, became completely<br />

dedicated to the matter of the immigrants<br />

from Luboml. All their time and effort went to<br />

help them.<br />

All immigrants who set foot in Israel learned<br />

the Blumens' address, 011 31 Aliyah Street. MaIke<br />

and Nathan's home was where all immigrants<br />

Welcome party for former residents of Luboml residing in the United States, 1960.<br />

met; still maintaining all their ties from the old<br />

country, this was where they became acclimated<br />

and acquainted with their new homeland. In the<br />

Blumen's home, the old-timers from Luboml met<br />

with the new immigrants and talked over tea and<br />

cookies.<br />

In this same home, many listened in silence<br />

to horror stories concerning the fate of the citizens<br />

of Luboml, and they were not ashamed<br />

when the tears rolled down their faces as they<br />

mourned the deaths of loved ones who had been<br />

murdered.<br />

In the Blumens' home, American citizens<br />

who had emigrated from Luboml met with Israeli<br />

relatives, also from Luboml, as well as with new<br />

immigrants from the town. Finally, in the<br />

Blumens' home all the committee members dedicated<br />

to help the new immigrants met and discussed<br />

ways to raise or lend money in order to<br />

help care for the newcomers.<br />

The first activity organized by the committee<br />

was the setting up of a free-loan fund. From<br />

1949 to 1950 there was a period of considerable<br />

poverty. Considering the fact that many new im-
