THE SURVIVORS AND THE RETURN TO LIFE 361
migrants arrived during this time, the loan afforded
them in the sum of 50 or 100 lira, without
interest and for an unlimited time, proved a
very big help. In certain cases money was given
as a gift rather than a loan.
The free-loan fund was established through
the contributions of former residents of Luboml.
When Nute Eiger was in Israel in 1949, he promised
to send a large sum of money upon his return
to the United Statesand he was true to his
word.
Also, 400 lira [125 British pounds] were sent
from Argentina. The rest of the money consisted
of donations collected in Israel from emigres from
Luboml. At the time of the first large memorial
gathering in 1948, committee members raised
money and gave all their funds to the free-loan
fund.
From then on, these yearly memorial gatherings
became a time for the collection of contributions.
From year to year, around the time of
Hoshana RabbaShmini Atzeret, the anniversary
of the day the Luboml Jewish extermination began,
there occur memorial services for the victims
of the Holocaust, as well as for those who
died in Israel. These take place at both informal
get-togethers and general gatherings of the townspeople.
Many meetings between natives of Luboml
visiting as tourists and former Luboml residents
living in Israel were arranged by the aforementioned
committee. These meetings took place in a
large auditorium where refreshments were
served. These gatherings were an opportunity for
a meeting of the massesthat is, of all Luboml
emigres, many who had not seen each other for
years.
Many smaller gatherings took place at the
home of Blumen-Tchelet. All this allowed for
the opportunity to have Luboml natives from Israel
and the diaspora strengthen their ties.
The organizing committee also established
ties with Yad Vashem [Holocaust memorial in
Jerusalem]. There, on the lower level, a plaque
was erected as a memorial to the citizens of
Luboml who perished in the Holocaust.
With the start of the drive for contributions
to build the Heichal Volyn, again Nathan Blumen
(Tchelet) took on the task and succeeded in raising
thousands of lirot registered as a contribution
from the committee of the Organization of
Immigrants from Luboml. When the Heichal was
completed, a memorial to Luboml citizens was
held there in 1969.
From that year on, all the memorial services
took place in the Heichal Volyn. The Heichal
gave the Organization of Immigrants from
Luboml a room for memorial services and meetr
