hand) at them and began to run. They shot at me,
but did not hit me. Later I learned that they had
killed both my mother and my brother.
While I was wandering in the woods, I came
upon a peasant whom I knew and who sent me to
his priest. I had nothing to lose anymore and so I
went to the priest, who turned out to be a fine
man. He got in touch with the organist of Libivne,
who in turn recommended that I go to his friend.
There I hid in a stable for a few weeks.
One morning the door of the stable was
opened and I saw my peasant together with a
German. I thought my end had come.
But my great dread soon turned to great joy; it
friends' home, telling them I was a Christian. He
came for me two days later and both of us went to
Warsaw. There he took me to a room where I
bathed and was given new underwear. From
Warsaw he brought me to Chenstochov. There he
took me to his other friends who, using various
highways and byways, brought me into a big
forest and left me there. From there I was to be on
my own, at risk for my life until I reached the
place of which they told me. Luckily I made it
through the forest.
As I was walking, I noticed small houses not
far from the station. I took a chance and went into
one of them, where I found a tailor, a decent man,
who was a Christian. He gave me a glass of warm
