El hecho de que entre 1946 y 1950 la editorial Pubul de Barcelona publicara dos libros de Viktor von Weizsaecker, Problemas clínicos de medicina psicosomática (1941) y Casos y problemas clínicos (1946-1947), me permitió entrar en contacto con sus ideas muy al comienzo de mi formación médica, cuando aún era alumno en la Facultad de Medicina. La infl uencia que su pensamiento ha ejercido, tanto en mi trabajo junto a los pacientes, como en el desarrollo de mi manera de concebir la medicina, ha sido, desde entonces, constante y duradera. Sus libros, que periódicamente releo desde hace más de treinta años, nunca han dejado de conmoverme o de aportarme alguna nueva luz, antes desapercibida, en cada nueva lectura. La obra de Viktor von Weizsaecker nos coloca frente a la tarea de rediseñar, sobre bases epistemológicas distintas de las habituales, la medicina entera, en el contacto vivo del médico con la totalidad humana del enfermo. En nuestros días, ya casi nadie ignora que la ciencia física se ha encontrado obligada a incluir al “sujeto” observador en el campo de estudio de sus experiencias “objetivas”, y asistimos, en los terrenos más disímiles del conocimiento, a una total renovación de los fundamentos que desdibuja las fronteras entre las distintas disciplinas. En estas circunstancias, las ideas de Weizsaecker pueden encontrar más fácilmente lugar y compañía en el edifi cio de la cultura. Pero, si tenemos en cuenta la época en que Weizsaecker realizó su obra, no puede dejar de sorprendernos la grandeza de su espíritu, la segura intuición que lo condujo a predecir un cambio que, todavía hoy, recién comienza y su excepcional capacidad para soportar la tortura de la soledad implícita en la inevitable incomprensión de su entorno intelectual. El intento de defi nir, aunque sea de un modo parcial e impreciso, en qué consiste la contribución de Weizsaecker, lleva implícito tener en cuenta
