La cealaltæ extremæ se aflæ Prayer for Art (Kenny Muhammad øi Adam Carrigan), în care artiøtii au rugat un numær de curatori sæ-øi dea glas rugæ- because others as well can reflect on the problems and processes of the transition from the totalitarian system through their own parallel histories, such as the fall down and the transformation of the South- African, South-European, and Latin American dictatorships. Likewise, instead of gazing our own navel, the emphasis on dialogue is really welcome, yet it is all the more surprising that the curators could not find more artists from Europe’s cultural bur to include. The few artists who were presented from this pool have been mostly selected from among those who went to the West (Lorraine O’Grady). The heralded dialogue with Africa has been interpreted so lightly, that Thierry Geoffroy (alias Colonel) had the urge to offer the African artists his own exhibition space, without any presetting. The findings of the “local” characters from the work Production: The New El Dorado in Murcia by Common Culture, according to which “it is good to recruit local forces into the show as well, because we are cheap”, respectively: “the maintenance of the cultural hegemony goes hand in hand with the disregard of the local tradition”, are touching a sensible, yet profoundly avoided issue. Originally Manifesta was the product of the end of the Cold War and the fall of the Iron Curtain to set up a bridge in the divided Europe, its mission was to diminish the dividedness by the agency of a Pan-European biennial. Doubtless, today, in the age of mass migrations and the net of mutual cultural influences, we can no longer speak about Europe in a narrow cultural or geographical sense. However, inspite of the popular slogan of the dialogue, it is still the concept and presence of Western art that dominate this, in its rethoric, much more promising exhibition. Manifesta 8 is the best – because there are, of course, as always, many powerful, relevant works – where theory and practice meet, where critical reflections on the world (or on art itself) are not carefully paraphrased or aestheticized, yet the work does not speak the language of direct propaganda either (video works by AGM and Ruti Sela; Melanie Gilligan and David Rych), and where powerfully revealing consonances are born (as between Mathieu Kleyebe Abbonenc and Igor and Ivan Bukharov; or between Bouchra Ouizguen and the paraphrase of Darius Mikšys). Self-reflectionIntrospection at Manifesta “Shall we go swimming tomorrow” – asks one of the local characters at the end of the work Production: The New El Dorado in Murcia by group Common Culture. The question puts art on the map of culture and leisure activities. The final question is preceded by the surprisingly well informed debate between the three posers. They are talking about how engaged art is today, about the way it gives voice to the oppressed and, at a given moment, they even fantasize that this exhibition play is just the newest form of colonialism. The best tourist is the cultural one, he/she who does not perturb, the public order, nor is drunk, does not interfere in roisterings with the police, but, instead, throws his/her money about. In the context of commercial telenovelas, of the colored and meretricious shirts and wigs, the words of the locals sound empty. Eventually, we come at the fact that they are not at home in such a place. The Puerto Rican artist from New York, Wanda Raimundi-Ortiz, uses an equally easy tone in Ask Chuleta. With a redeeming naivety, she explains to some invisible interlocutors what contemporary art is, undeceiving its phenomena, and observes in wonder that, it is interesting that she scarcely sees herself at a biennial. In the age of biennials and more and more global mega-exhibitions, one of Manifesta 8’s qualities of mark is the reflection on the exhibition as medium and on art. The “meta” prefix can therefore be used not only as, for instance, in the compound word “metacommunication”. It can also designate the way Manifesta deals with itself, with its situation and its history. Although the self-reflection is present in the work of each of the three curatorial groups, ACAF was the one to pay the utmost attention to this aspect, not only through the works it has selected to display, but also through the elaboration of a 103
