prelungitæ a angajamentului colectiv.
socialist rus Vpered, a gæzduit „Noaptea Declarafliilor Furioase“, invitînd vizitatorii
cea de locus (being-in) [a-fi-în], înspre nofliunea de a-fi-printre [being-among]. Ceea
constante a ideilor fundamentale.
create a structure for a different fruition of time as well as space can
be read in relation to what Svetlana Boym has defined as an “unfinished
critical project of modernity, based on an alternative understanding
of temporality”. 5 The Russian collective, as many other
contemporary artists and political groups, seems interested in taking
forward such unfinished project attempting to shape a different
experience of time: a time for reconsidering the relation between
present and past events and collectively refute to live the present
as a projection towards an already shaped future.
“What is to be done” is a question in two-phases, where acting will
only be possible after having found a way of existing as a community,
developing a field for intellectual practice. Giorgio Agamben’s
The Coming Community and Jean-Luc Nancy’s The Inoperative
Community are among the most interesting texts that, in the past
two decades, have attempted to define a new type of communal living.
Such new communities are able to overcome linguistically forged
and divisive definitions of identities by refusing to define themselves
through universalistic notions of essence. For both Nancy and Agamben,
being-in-common is not a “common being”, a quality shared by
all parts of the community, but resides in what is shared by all individuals:
language. Agamben defines such shared being in terms of
communicability as such or “communicability without communication”,
while Nancy refers to it as “literature” or “communication
itself”. 6 For Nancy, central to the community is “the passage from
one to another, the sharing of one by the other”, as in the case of
fragments of discourse or written texts which circulate through continuous
interruptions, re-appropriations, reformulations. 7 In this
respect, the idea of community moves away from both the idea of
essence and the idea of locus (being-in), towards a notion of beingamong.
What has until now been described as the educational or
dialogical aspect of Chto Delat’s work can certainly be interpreted
in relation to the members’ desire to negotiate their common being
through collective discussion and the constant mediation and reformulation
of their core ideas. Going beyond the notion of the rhizome,
they seem to share the objective of existing not so much as
an expanding and mutating organism but as an ongoing form of
conversation. Such aspect of the collective materialises through their
written work, films and public debates, and is pivotal to one of the
five videos on monitor occupying the central space of the gallery:
The Builders (2005). The video makes explicit reference to Victor
Popkov’s painting The Builders of Bratsk (1961), in which four men
and a woman are portrayed in a moment of rest, standing or sitting
down smoking a cigarette. The painting is of an epic and lyrical realism,
and yet the people portrayed are common individuals, dressed
in their working cloths, visibly tired and pensive. Moreover, their
frontal and static poses and their intense gaze suggest that they are
consciously awaiting to step into a new era, which they understand
and can master. The video shows static images of members of Chto
Delat taking on poses and choreographing compositions reminiscent
of the one of the painting, while voices over comments on
Popkov’s work in relation to the nature and work of the collective.
Differently from the individuals portrayed in the painting, the members
of Chto Delat look at each other, play, establish physical
contact and constantly change their configurations and postures.
They talk about friendship, multidisciplinarity and the importance of
meeting again after a conflict, in order to seek a space for reconciliation
while continuing to express different and often contrasting opinions.
Through a broad array of fragments of speech and images,
The Builders successfully represents the idea of a community that
defines itself through the production of “literature” as a form of
shared knowledge, rather than via the definition of strict parameters
of action.
At the end of the gallery, overlooking it, a life-sized two-dimensional
reproduction of a monument embodies the epic stance of the collective
being. Partisan Monument (2009–10), is a collage of two images
of existing works from the early 1950s and brings together a statue
