Also condemned in 1930 for being members <strong>of</strong> a “counter-revolutionary<br />

organization” headed by Bishop Benjamin in “The Case <strong>of</strong> Bishop Benjamin<br />

(Troitsky) and o<strong>the</strong>rs, Ufa, 1930” were:<br />

Priest Gregory Nazarovich Mikheev. He was born in 1887 in <strong>the</strong> village <strong>of</strong><br />

Saninskoye, Ufa uyezd, Ufa province into a peasant family. In 1927 Bishop<br />

Benjamin ordained him to <strong>the</strong> priesthood, and he began to serve in his native<br />

village. On June 20, 1930 he was arrested, and on December 3 was convicted<br />

and sentenced to death in accordance with articles 58-10 part 2 and 58-13. The<br />

sentence was carried out on <strong>the</strong> same day.<br />

Priest Peter Vasilyevich Konfetkin. He was born in 1878 in <strong>the</strong> village <strong>of</strong><br />

Knyazevo, Ufa uyezd, into a peasant family. He is called an Old Ritualist, but<br />

appears never<strong>the</strong>less to have been in Bishop Benjamin’s diocese. He was<br />

ordained to <strong>the</strong> priesthood in 1917, and served in Ufa province. In 1925 he<br />

was arrested for “anti-Soviet activity” and exiled for three years. In January,<br />

1930, while serving as a priest in Bashkiria, he was arrested and sentenced to<br />

six months’ forced labour for “late payment <strong>of</strong> taxes”. On July 23, 1930, while<br />

living in Birsk, he was arrested and cast into <strong>the</strong> domzak in Birsk. When<br />

Bishop Benjamin declared a hunger strike on November 26, he declared one<br />

in support <strong>of</strong> him three days later. On December 3 he was convicted and<br />

sentenced to ten years in <strong>the</strong> camps in accordance with articles 58-10 part 2<br />

and 58-13. He was sent to a camp, where on October 28, 1937 he was arrested<br />

again. On December 10 he was sentenced to death and shot.<br />

Priest Ivan Ignatyevich Kanafyev. He was born in 1888 in <strong>the</strong> village <strong>of</strong><br />

Turgeneyevo, Duvansky region, Ufa canton, Ufa province into a peasant<br />

family. In 1928 he was ordained to <strong>the</strong> priesthood by Bishop Benjamin, and<br />

was sent to serve in <strong>the</strong> village <strong>of</strong> Troshkino, Ufa canton. His family was<br />

composed <strong>of</strong> four people. On June 17, 1930 he was arrested, and on December<br />

3 convicted and sentenced to ten years in <strong>the</strong> camps, commuted to ten years’<br />

exile in <strong>the</strong> north, in accordance with articles 58-10 part 2 and 58-13. Nothing<br />

more is known about him.<br />

Priest Andrew Stepanovich Baranov. He was born in 1892 in <strong>the</strong> village <strong>of</strong><br />

Dmitrievka, Ufa uyezd, Ufa province into a peasant family. During <strong>the</strong> First<br />

World War he served in <strong>the</strong> tsarist army. On June 4, 1930 he was arrested and<br />

cast into <strong>the</strong> isolator in Ufa. On November 29, 1930 he declared a hungerstrike<br />

in protest against <strong>the</strong> sentence against Bishop Benjamin. On December<br />

3, 1930 he was convicted and sentenced to ten years in <strong>the</strong> camps with<br />

confiscation <strong>of</strong> property in accordance with articles 58-2 and 19. On February<br />

7, 1946 he was arrested again in Ufa, and on May 17 was sentenced again to<br />

ten years in <strong>the</strong> camps with confiscation <strong>of</strong> property in accordance with<br />

articles 58-10 and 58-11. He served this second sentence in a camp in Komi,<br />

and <strong>the</strong>n, from January 25, 1949 in special camp no. 1 at Inta station on <strong>the</strong><br />

Pechersk railway station in Komi. On March 10, 1955 he was released under<br />
