archimandrite and dean <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> women’s monasteries <strong>of</strong> Syzran uyezd.On July<br />

12, 1912 he was appointed superior <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ascension monastery in Syzran, and<br />

in 1916 – superior <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Zhadovskaya Desert. In 1924 he was given a two-year<br />

conditional sentence for “non-denunciation”. He was released from Simbirsk<br />

Domzak and returned to <strong>the</strong> Zhadovskaya Desert. At <strong>the</strong> beginning <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

1920s <strong>the</strong> monastery was closed, but about twenty monks still remained in <strong>the</strong><br />

community and services continued in <strong>the</strong> Kazan church. Even after its formal<br />

closure <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> community in 1927 monks continued to serve <strong>the</strong>re. Finally, in<br />

July, 1929 <strong>the</strong> paralyzed Elder Basil from <strong>the</strong> village <strong>of</strong> Kopyshevka was<br />

brought to <strong>the</strong> monastery. This served as <strong>the</strong> excuse for <strong>the</strong> conducting <strong>of</strong> a<br />

criminal case against <strong>the</strong>m, and on March 15, 1930 Archimandrite Callistus<br />

and Hieromonks Damascene and Arcadius were arrested. On April 10 Fr.<br />

Callistus was sentenced to five years in <strong>the</strong> camps, commuted to exile to <strong>the</strong><br />

north for <strong>the</strong> same period. He was sent to <strong>the</strong> Moscow-Volga canal. Nothing<br />

more is known about him.<br />

Hieromonk Damascene (Demetrius Gerasimovich Aristov). He was born in<br />

1876 or 1877, and served in <strong>the</strong> Zhadovskaya Desert. He was sentenced to<br />

three years in <strong>the</strong> camps. Nothing more is known about him.<br />

Hieromonk Arcadius, in <strong>the</strong> world Alexander Kireyevich (Kirillovich)<br />

Fokin. He was born in about 1893 and at first lived as a simple monk in <strong>the</strong><br />

Zhadovskaya Desert. He was sentenced to three years in <strong>the</strong> camps. Nothing<br />

more is known about him.<br />

Priest Vladimir Petrovich Veselovsky was born in 1882 in <strong>the</strong> village <strong>of</strong><br />

Zeleniye Khutora, Atkarsk region, Saratov province. On August 14, 1929 he<br />

was arrested for “anti-Soviet agitation among <strong>the</strong> believers (against <strong>the</strong><br />

removal <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> bell in <strong>the</strong> church). On December 3 he was sentenced to ten<br />

years’ imprisonment. Nothing more is known about him.<br />

Priest Alexander Alexandrovich Kurkov was born in 1884 in <strong>the</strong> village <strong>of</strong><br />

Shakhovskoye, Khvaynsky region, Saratov province, and served in <strong>the</strong> village<br />

<strong>of</strong> N. Zakharkino, Atkarsk region, Saratov province. On October 31, 1929 he<br />

was arrested for “anti-Soviet agitation”, and on January 25, 1931 was<br />

sentenced to five years’ imprisonment. Nothing more is known about him.<br />

Alexander Ilarionovich Zakharov was born in 1877 in <strong>the</strong> village <strong>of</strong><br />

Tavolozhka, Petrovsky region, Saratov province. On November 6, 1929 he was<br />
